The Carbohydrate Metabolism Test is a genetic analysis designed to help you understand how your body processes carbohydrates, such as sugars and starches. This test focuses on specific genes that regulate the digestion, absorption, and utilization of carbohydrates, offering personalized insights into how your unique genetic profile may influence your metabolic health. By examining genetic variants in key genes, the test can reveal your predisposition to conditions like insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and type 2 diabetes.

What You’ll Learn from This Test

A Carbohydrate Metabolism DNA test does not require you to provide a blood sample. Our test is performed using buccal swabs that we provide in our home sample collection kit. Collecting samples is quick and easy if you follow the instructions provided carefully.

Sample collection instructions can be found on our “How to Collect DNA Samples” page.

Please read our terms and conditions for clinical and health-related testing carefully and make sure you understand them before placing an order.

What You’ll Learn from This Test

    • Personalized Insights: This test provides information on how your body handles sugar and starch, based on your genetic makeup.
    • Risk of Metabolic Conditions: By analysing genetic variants in specific genes, you’ll gain insight into your susceptibility to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
    • Dietary and Lifestyle Recommendations: Based on your genetic results, you’ll receive tailored suggestions to optimize your metabolism, prevent blood sugar imbalances, and improve your overall health.

The science behind the test

Carbohydrate metabolism is a complex process involving multiple genes and biochemical pathways. Genetic variations in these genes can impact how efficiently your body processes carbohydrates, affecting everything from blood sugar regulation to fat storage. The key genes analysed in this test are:

  1. PPARG (Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma): This gene plays a crucial role in regulating lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as insulin sensitivity. Certain genetic variants in PPARG are linked to an increased risk of insulin resistance and obesity.
  2. KCNJ11 (Potassium Inwardly Rectifying Channel Subfamily J Member 11): This gene helps regulate insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. Mutations in KCNJ11 can impair insulin secretion, leading to blood sugar imbalances and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
  3. TCF7L2 (Transcription Factor 7 Like 2): TCF7L2 is involved in the regulation of insulin secretion and glucose sensitivity. Variants in this gene are some of the strongest known genetic risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

Your results will indicate whether you carry any unfavourable genetic variants that affect your carbohydrate metabolism.
